  • Four departments respond to Kalona fire
    A fire still under investigation reportedly broke out in the back of the Kalona Bakery building, 209 5th Street, Kalona Saturday, June 25.  Kalona, Wellman, Riverside and Washington departments responded to the call that came in at 7:50 p.m.
  • Parade Grand Marshal exited to represent town
    His family started a very popular business. He was very active in the community. Now he has the chance to add another claim to fame - Parade Grand Marshal. Bob Swartzendruber will hold that honor during this year's Wellman Fourth of July parade.
  • Summertime treat enjoyed
    Children from Sunrise Daycare in Wellman took time Friday morning, June 17, to eat free ice cream from Federation Bank during the bank's celebration of Dairy Month. One in particular, four-year-old John Schickerling, especially enjoyed his ice cream cone. (Photos by Bill Gatchel)

Dean Rhodes, Spanish professor at Goshen College, Goshen, Indiana, walked the 500 plus mile Camino de Santiago or The Way of St. James path. This is a medieval Christian pilgrimage across parts of France and Northern Spain.

J-POG, Just Peace Outreach Group, invites you to hear about his journey this Sunday, February 22 at East Union Mennonite Church. Come at 6 p.m. for a finger foods potluck and conversation (please bring your own table service) or at 7 p.m. to hear Rhodes’s presentation.

  • Wellman resident's third book hits the shelves

    It's been a lengthy process, but the time has arrived. It's not the latest high-tech gadget, it's a little more old-fashioned: a book.

    Tom Nye of Wellman has been working on his book series Amish Horses for three years, and the latest release, English River, is the final part to the three-part set.

    Strictly seen by the Mid-Prairie Board as a short-term solution, there will be two kindergarten sections with 27 students each for 2016-17 at Kalona Elementary School  There also will be two additional teacher associates, one for each classroom.  The computer lab will made available as an overflow room for small group activities.

  • Golden Hawks down PCM

    Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks (8-2) took to the road Wednesday and put down PCM Monroe 28-10 in the first round of Class 2A playoffs and advance to the second round Monday, November 2, traveling to Albia (10-0) for a 7 p.m. game. 

    Mid-Prairie Nolan Faselt was key in the win, as he pushed his way through the PCM defensive line play after play all evening. The first touchdown came about six minutes into the first quarter. Following Mid-Prairie's methodical drive downfield, Karson Duwa walked into the end zone. The extra point by Terryhn Jacoby was good to put MP on the boards 7-0.

    Mid-Priaire (7-2) will play PCM, Monroe (7-2) at PCM, Monroe Wednesday, October 28 at 7 p.m. in the Class 2A first round playoff.  Mid-Prairie beat Mediapolis Friday night 20-7 for third place in District 5 behind Williamsburg (6-3)  and district winner Central Lee (8-1).

    Other local teams in the playoffs in Class 3A playing Wednesday, October 28 at 7 p.m. include Clear Creek-Amana (5-4) vs. Maquoketa (6-3) at Maquoketa and Solon (5-4) vs. Washington (7-2) at Washington.
