    Fire crews from Wellman and Kalona responded to a house fire at 1310 1st Ave Friday morning.

    Wesley Van Dyk, 69, of Kalona, died peacefully Monday, February 16, 2015, at Parkveiw Home in Wellman, surrounded by his family.

    A celebration of life will be held Friday, February 20, at 11 a.m. at the Kalona United Methodist Church with Pastor Gerry Kahler officiating. An hour of visitation will be held from 10–11 a.m. A memorial fund has been established for Hospice of Washington County. Beatty Peterseim Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

    Stephen S. Harland, 57, of Kalona, died of cancer Sunday, February 15, 2015, at his home. A Visitation will be held Saturday, February 21, from 2–7 p.m. at the Peterseim Funeral Home in Kalona with the family present from 4–7 p.m. There will be no funeral service. A memorial fund has been established for Hospice of Washington County.

    Effie M. Miller, 97, of Kalona, died Sunday, August 3, 2014, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 7, at 10 a.m. at the Fairview Mennonite Church with Pastors Don Swartzentruber, Perry Miller and Leon Stutzman officiating.

    Iowa Mennonite girls cross country runners Riley Schmieder and Renee Buckwalter finished 38th and 47th in 16:16.4 and 16:38.3 respectively at the state meet in Fort Dodge Saturday. Kirby Shetler was the lone IMS runner for the boys team. He placed 40th with a time of 17:50.
