  • Church group runs in Keota Fun Days race
    A total of 26 individuals from Prairie Flower Baptist Church in Washington were part of a record-setting 140 participants who braved the rain Saturday morning, June 13, in the Keota Fun Run.

    Weeping Willow, Wellman’s newest retail business, is more like a four-leaf clover. An innovative offering of salon, gift shop, fabric selections and coffee shop, it opened last Wednesday at 265 8th Avenue.

    Phillip Ward Preston, 78, of North Liberty, died Monday, June 15, 2015, after a short illness. Visitation will be held at Peterseim Funeral Home in Kalona Thursday, June 18, from 4-7 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Peterseim Funeral Home Friday, June 19, at 10:30 a.m. with burial to follow at Sharon Hill Cemetery. Friends and family are invited to join in fellowship at the Kalona Family Restaurant following the burial.

    Althea Mae Hoskins, 90, of Wellman, died Wednesday, June 10, 2015, at Parkview in Wellman. Funeral Services were held Monday, June 15, at the Pleasant Plain Friends Church in Pleasant Plain. Pastor John McDonald officiated. Burial was in the Friends Cemetery. Visitation was held Sunday at the Powell Funeral Home in Wellman. A general memorial fund has been established.     Dorothy Stumpf, 84, of Kalona, died Saturday, June 13, 2015 at Mercy Hospital, Iowa City. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, June 16, at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Richmond with Fr. David Brownfield officiating. Burial was in the Holy Trinity Cemetery, Richmond. Visitation was Monday, June 15, at the Peterseim Funeral Home, Kalona. Memorial donations may be directed to Iowa City Hospice or Masses Intentions. Peterseim Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.

    Remodeling, repurposing and renovating the existing Kalona Community Center could get the city the center it wants more efficiently and cheaper than building new. Council members Monday received a professional services proposal from Martin Gardner Architecture of Marion to plan and design space for wellness and meeting rooms, as well as an addition to the Center that also houses city offices.
